Smothered Green Beans and Potatoes

Smothered green beans and potatoes are one of my favorite side dishes. It’s super easy to make and so flavorful. This dish makes the perfect side dish for Sunday dinners and family dinner. Usually, when I make this dish, I add chopped bacon or smoked meat. For this recipe, I stuck to just the potatoes and green beans. I wanted a light but fulfilling side for this Sunday dinner. You are more than welcome to add meat if you like. Bacon, turkey necks, and sausage are some ideas to add. Let’s jump into this easy recipe.

Grocery List

  • 1 bag of whole green beans- I used fresh green beans from the produce section, frozen green beans work as well
  • 1 Large Russet Potato or use 2 potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 4-5 slices of bacon chopped (optional)
  • 1 tbsp of banquet browning sauce
  • 1 tbsp of flour
  • 1 cup of  cold water
  • Olive Oil
  • Seasoning used: 1 packet of sazon, 1 packet of goya chicken seasoning, garlic powder, black pepper,Dash Garlic & Herb (at least 1 tbsp of each spice)

How to make Smothered Green Beans

  1. Prepare the ingredients. Peel and rinse potato. Slice potato into medium-sized pieces. Also, get the onion chopped and any other ingredients you will be adding.
  2. Rinse the green beans with cold water and pat dry.
  3. In a pot or skillet, add a few splashes of olive oil. Turn stove on medium heat. Then add the potatoes and green beans. Saute in the oil for about 5 minutes.
  4. Add onion and seasonings. Stir everything together. Keep cooking for about 3 minutes.
  5. Mix together flour and water in a cup, then pour it into the pot of green beans. Stir together, and turn the heat down a little. Put the lid over the green beans and cook for 20 minutes. Stir the beans 2-3 times during cook time. Add more water as needed.
  6. Now, add the browning sauce. Stir and let cook on low for about 10-15 minutes or until the potatoes are soft.
