Old Fashioned Beef Stew

Beef stew is one of my old time favorite recipes. This stew is needed on these cold fall and winter nights. Beef stew is hearty and sure to warm the body with every bite. The key to a perfect beef stew is to take your time and let the stew cook on low. This is a great recipe to try on a day off or when you have some time at home.

How easy is it to make this stew?

This Beef Stew is made with seasoned Beef chuck meat. This meat is first seared then placed in a pot to cook with broth, onion , fresh garlic, tomato paste and spices. After cooking on low for about 2 hour and 30 minutes, I add the potatoes and vegetables. I let the stew then cook for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. In all, this stew takes up to 4 hours to cook.

Pot of beef stew with added mixed vegetables and potatoes

Directions

  • First, prepare the beef by rinsing and seasoning. If you are using a whole beef chuck, just cut that into cubes.
  • Next, in a frying pan add few tablespoons of oil and let that warm up. Then add the beef. Let the beef brown in the pan for about 10 minutes. Take beef out and set to the side when done searing.
  • Now get the onions, garlic and bell pepper chopped up. Turn stove on medium heat, then add vegetables in the pot you will be making stew in, drizzle some oil over the vegetables. Let that cook for about 5 minutes, then stir in tomato paste.
  • After stirring in tomato paste add worcestershire sauce, stir that in. Then add beef broth. Give it another stir. And turn stove down to low heat.
  • Let stew cook for about 2 hours and 30 minutes on Low Heat.
  • Next, add potatoes and mixed vegetables and a couple of splashes of browning seasoning. Also add beef bouillon. Give it a stir and let cook for about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • When done potatoes will be soft and beef will fall apart. You can check by using a fork.
