The Best Candied Yams

If you are looking for a sweet and comforting side dish for this holiday, you have come to the right place! Candied Yams is a traditional side in my family and most families for Thanksgiving. Also, other holidays like Christmas, and Easter. Of course this dish is not stuck to one specific day, it’s a great side to have with dinner period. This dish is very easy to make. It can be made in a crockpot/slow cooker, oven or over the stove. For this recipe, I usually make my yams in the crockpot. This method takes just a little longer, at least 2 1/2 hours to cook. Good thing is that this recipe works for whatever cooking method you choose. All of your ingredients will be added to your sweet potatoes to make a sweet savory side. Brown sugar, white sugar, vanilla will be the key to bringing your yams to life. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Let’s get into this recipe.

What you will need

  • 4-7 yams or sweet potatoes (double recipe for more, this recipe can feed at least a family of 5)
  • 1/2cup of brown sugar ( adding a little more wont hurt)
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • 1 tsp ground Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp of cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp of butter or a half stick of butter
  • 1-2cups of water

How to make Candied Yams

  1. First, take a peeler and take skin off yams, then rinse your yams, pat dry with paper towel.
  2. Next, chop up your potatoes(yams) or Slice, in small or medium sizes pieces. This will help your potatoes to cook.
  3. Now you can add your yams to the crockpot.
  4. Take your tbsp of cornstarch, sprinkle over yams, give it a mix to coat all. This will thicken the yams.
  5. Now add all of the ingredients, brown sugar, white sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and last water. Making sure water is at least covering bottom dont need to fill water over potatoes. Give it a mix
  6. Last, cut your butter in to small pieces, add over the top of yams spread out.
  7. When using crockpot cook on high or medium high for at least 2 1/2 hours. For cooking in oven preheat oven to about 375 degrees, and let cook covered for about 45 minutes then Cook uncovered for about 15 – 20 minutes. When done yams will be soft and tender enough for fork to go through.
